We notice our readers have been a bit confused about the local homicide count so far this year and, as always we want to help relay as much info as possible . . .
Per ushe we point everyone to the KCPD blue sheet which is the official resource.
The daily doesn't keep accurate numbers because they count officer-related shootings in their count.
The reason most local news uses the "blue sheet" number is because it conforms to " Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR)" standards and it's reported to the FBI every year, then sent to the DOJ and is part of an annual government report . . . The peer review process seems more valid than dead-tree newsies playing politics.
Right now . . . The 2026 homicide count stands at 8 . . . Last year at this time it was 12 . . . In 2023, a record breaking year for killing on local streets . . . The count was only 7 at this date.
January is typically where KCMO makes most of its progress in reducing the homicide count. So it's important to watch these numbers early.
Accordingly . . . This tragic incident is why many of our readers have been overestimating the count:
A police spokesperson said that while the investigation is ongoing, “we can say at this point that the case is being investigated as an apparent double suicide."
