This week Mayor Q is already hard at work talking with colleagues about the reality of ICE on local streets.
Read closely and notice that it seems like the strategy that's emerging is to maintain the policy that KCPD has held for decades . . . Mainly that KCPD doesn't prioritize immigration enforcement. It's a low-key strategy that even the Missouri GOP hasn't wasted much effort fighting and in his latest statement the Mayor highlights this gentleman's agreement that might or might not hold until after Midterms are decided.
Here's the word . . .
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas joined a call with mayors and police chiefs from across the country to discuss rising tensions around immigration enforcement following the death of former Kansas City resident Renee Good.
“We want to make sure that we have protection for local law enforcement,” Lucas said. “ICE and federal agencies can do a whole lot of work along the way, but we need to make sure that our local law enforcement agencies are still respected, frankly, that they still are the ones that people know they can call.”
An often repeated consideration of pro-migrant politicos . . .
The mayor emphasized that calling 911 should still connect residents with officers focused on community safety rather than immigration enforcement.
“In Kansas City, we want to make sure that people aren’t abused. We want to make sure that we’re solving violent crimes, and that is regardless of your status,” Lucas said. “If you are a victim, you should feel comfortable calling 911.”
