Amid intense debate over immigration policy at the local & national level . . . A critical conversation regarding the upcoming local lockup was pushed out of the spotlight.
Here at TKC it's a big part of what we do to bring more attention to important policy discussions that will impact KCMO neighborhoods.
To wit . . . On blast via social media late last night, we noticed this . . .
COUNCILMAN CRISPIN REA PUSHES BACK AGAINST MAYOR Q'S CLANDESTINE MOVE OF THE NEW JAIL WITHOUT COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT!!!
Actually . . .
Moving the jail is a big deal and if we're to believe local progressives . . . Community input on this kind of project is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to making the right decision.
Accordingly . . .
Here's the quote that will ACTUALLY have more local impact than all of the politicking over midterms that's dominating newscasts & social media conversation this week . . . Check-it:
"With very little transparency, the Mayor pushed an ordinance to move the municipal detention center site from I-70 and 40 Hwy (a location overwhelmingly supported by voters last April) to Front Street just to the east of Frontier Academy. I opposed it. There was zero community engagement, we bypassed the ordinary council process of committee hearings and public testimony, and made the decision without completed analysis proving that it’s a lower cost site. There is a high school nearby, businesses, and neighborhoods that were not consulted. It very well could be a great location, however, process and transparency should still matter. And it absolutely matters that as your Councilman I push for accountability on the commitments we made to the voters who overwhelmingly supported the original plan back in April."
