The 2026 Kansas legislative session is scheduled to be shorter than usual, potentially the shortest in a decade.
Some lawmakers have expressed concerns that the compressed schedule rushes the legislative process and increases tension.
The shorter session coincides with a recent pay raise for legislators and a new process where they create the budget from scratch.

Starting in 2025, rank-and-file legislators got a raise from about $30,000 to nearly $58,000 in total compensation.
