Show-Me Prose & Cons

This old school SNL sketch doesn't hold up but it made lil TKC laugh years ago.

About this blog . . .

We have a penchant for prison writing . . .

When Catholic school was attempting middle-school brain washing, my Dad lent me his copy of Soul On Ice in order to help offer an alternative world view . . .

Years later . . .

Dad also give me a copy of Monster: The Autobiography of an L.A. Gang Member -- A book that provided earth shattering perspective behind the plauge of gangs that was claiming lives on local streets during the early 90s. For close readers who delved deeper than Crip tough guy stories . . . The book was REALLY about how improved gun technology turned street violence more deadly.

In college, Mom & Dad shared their thoughts with a younger, prettier TKC about Gulag Archipelago -- A Russian classic from political prisoner Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

The lesson might be that some of the best writing, insights and perspectives come from the depths of the human experience enduring incarceration. . . For better and worse, Missouri might have a place in so many stories of human tragedy . . .

Take a read:

"The book is neither a true crime recap nor a long-winded polemic about injustice — though both topics are explored at various times in various ways.

"Some letters reflect on news of the day, and its impact on her time behind bars — like the floods of 1993 and the plane crash that killed Governor Mel Carnahan.

"But ultimately, what makes her correspondence so compelling is its unquashed optimism.

"Whether she’s writing to old friends or public officials, her children, her parents or a new romantic interest, Prewitt’s voice is consistently even-keeled, mildly acerbic and peppered with an occasional punch line."
