Kansas City Royals Lose Leverage As Chiefs Leave

More than anyone else, The Kansas City Chiefs betrayed the Royals with their move to Kansas.

Consider . . .

- KCMO taxpayers are off the hook by way of MILLIONS for a team led by an injured Patrick Mahomes who will likely be "damaged goods" for the remainder of his career.

 - Kansas football fans win a VERY EXPENSIVE SHINY TOY and hope to forget that the legacy of the franchise was accomplished somewhere else. They're getting the McMansion version of the house that visionary Lamar Hunt built.

Meanwhile . . .

The Kansas City Royals are tragically late to the negotiating game despite longstanding demands for a new stadium with a "downtown" vibe.

These important facts back up our thesis . . .

JoCo doesn't want the Royals . . . Time and time again our suburbanite friends have made it abundantly clear that the team isn't worth the trouble.

Baseball is a sport in decline . . . In an era of increasing complexity and a rougher economy at the low-end: The baseball fan base continues to erode and trends downward overall. Quick example: NOBODY claims that baseball is "American's pastime" any longer . . . It's a game for Boomers with A LOT of disposable income and that isn't a strong position going forward.

The Royals ownership isn't likeable . . . They claim to be philanthropists but demands for a few BILLION in free money kinda negate a lot of their good works. The reality is that most KCMO residents only know Sherman for his annoying cat & mouse routine for a new stadium and nothing else.

In the final analysis . . .

Kansas City wanted to keep the Chiefs and now that they're gone, the Royals feel like a consolation prize. Instead of playing a losing pro-sport game, municiapl leadership would be wise to take this opportunity to imagine the future of KC proper without corporate branding that proved disloyal when their legal extortion tactics FAILED.
