Today, an "EPIC" presser to announce teams competing in the World Cup served to provide us a real world preview of impending frustration, misdirection and overall letdown.
First . . .
The whole thing was a bait and switch and fans were forced to listen to 90s hip-hop R&B singer Lauryn Hill for a half an hour before the results were revealed . . . This slap in the face in and of itself should reveal that World Cup organizers are openly disrespecting the public and have very little regard for fans. If they really wanted to relive the 90s to 2010s by way of B-list talent . . . Fergie or Xtina would have been stronger choice. Alicia Keys would have been the classy choice.
But I digress . . .
More importantly . . .
What did we learn???
Not much.
However . . .
The non-event narrowed down teams but there's YET ANOTHER PRESSER that will do the same.
And therein lies the problem.
The Euro mentality is just FAR DIFFERENT from American sensibilities.
Forgive the generalizations but our Euro friends seem far more comfortable with corruption, elitism and dysfunction than sports fan in the States . . . In fact, the illusion of fairness is part of the fun for American sporting fans . . . Even when everything else is so obviously rigged, American sports offer a respite wherein competition on a level playing field determines the winners. Europe doesn't allow that kind of ideological indulgence . . .
And so . . .
This preview informs us on what we can expect from FIFA and the impending soccer circus . . .
"While they won't be playing in Kansas City, the United States' group includes Australia, Paraguay and the winner of European Playoff C, made up of Slovakia vs. Kosovo and Turkey vs. Romania.
"If Argentina comes to KC, that means one of the biggest sports stars in the world, Lionel Messi, would likely join them."
