"The Chamber was trying to make Kansas City more welcoming for immigrants. The foundation was trying to support a key partner and focusing on economic development. Seemed natural.
"I sat next to a former CEO and civic leader.
"The conversation focused on the strategy for supporting a comprehensive immigration policy, increasing access to visas for highly skilled immigrants, and creating training programs that build cultural competence to help immigrants as they job train.
"And I could feel him becoming more agitated as the conversation progressed.
"Finally, he blurted out that he didn’t want to make anything more comfortable for “illegal aliens.”
"He wasn’t paying attention to the highly skilled. He zeroed in on laborers.
"Nearly everyone in the room knew his company relied on immigrant labor. No one was willing to say it out loud.
"That’s still where we are today: corporations depend on immigrant and low-wage labor, but flinch or go silent when the politics get loud."
