Judge Decides If Charlie Kirk Assassination Merits 'Matter Of Public Concern' For Kansas

Katie Allen was a research analyst for the Kansas State Department of Education before commenting "well deserved" on a Facebook post about Kirk's assassination. Allen, who deleted and apologized for the post, no longer works for the state government — which has resulted in a lawsuit in U.S. District Court.

One aspect of the case is whether Kirk's assassination was an issue of public concern, which matters because it could affect whether Allen is protected by the First Amendment.

Allen's lawsuit argues the free speech protections in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution cover "public employees speaking as private citizens on matters of public concern."
