Forum: Can New Chief Save KCFD?!?

Behind the scenes, insiders share this tidbit . . .

KCFD is closer to "federally-inspired" break-up than most denizens of neighborhood station houses might realize as the public/private model gains popularity yet again.

A few arguments that are gaining traction against the local FD . . .

- A legacy that lacks "diverse" hiring and promotion -- That might not be a big deal given a change of policy but new rules don't inspire a Democratic Party leaning city.

- Post-Crash Hard Feelings: A controversial reinstatement case following a deadly Westport crash has sparked a great deal of resentment against first responders who are generally regarded as real-life heroes.

- GOP War Against Public Pensions: Not all the criticism is coming from progressives. Across the nation the GOP hope to cut pensions in the name of fiscal responsibility and KCMO firefighters have the best benefits in all of the American Midwest. Budget hawks have long lamented public largess for the KCFD and now harsh economic times see those arguments also gaining traction.

- Morale: Finally, insiders share that KCFD job satisfaction suffers amid changing times, more scrutiny & an increasingly complex working environment . . . More than anything THIS might be the greatest concern confronting the new boss.

Reality check . . .

It's usually gossip, family/nepotism beef and politics that bring down most of KCFD leaders.

All of these topics and more might come up at an upcoming forum . . .

Check-it . . .

Tuesday’s announcement comes as the host prepares to host a public forum on Thursday with the three finalists: The forum is set for 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Truman Forum Auditorium at the Kansas City Public Library’s Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., KCMO.
