The family says it was a simple mistake, not an orchestrated theft. They say it was confusion, thinking another family member paid for an item before tossing it in the cart. Their mother also says they would’ve happily showed the receipt and paid the difference rather than be put into handcuffs, and that the whole encounter could have been handled differently.
A KCPD spokesman says the two boys were handcuffed for resisting officers.
“These are kids,” Vaquandra told the officer in the video. “They did not resist anything because they were not aware of anything.”
