The news is calling this move "historic" but after years of chatter & blathering . . . It feels like an anti-climax.
Moreover . . .
Kansas City proper might celebrate given that suckers in Topeka decided to make the billionaire Hunt family richer in the midst of economic harsh times for most Americans AND this move is much less embarrassing than the Chicago Bears considering an exodus to Indiana.
Moreover . . .
Most likely, the Chiefs will still be playing in "Kansas City" . . . Just the one in Kansas . . . For most NFL fans, none of this changes much.
The real loser in this scenario is the Truman Sports complex which is now a ghost town in the making and a future drain on Jackson County taxpayers.
Admittedly . . . This is a bright side . . . BUT . . . This move might say more about the appeal of the nearby Lee's Summit rather than KC proper . . . Given that a growing suburban and economic center wasn't enough to keep the franchise.
On second thought . . .
Mayor Q is going to have a response presser later in the afternoon but that doesn't really matter given that he's the guy who lost the Chiefs.
Here are the basics . . .
"After years of debates, proposals and pleas from local and state politicians, the Kansas City Chiefs are moving across the state line, marking a historic gain for Kansas, and another heartbreaking loss for Missouri in the world of professional football."
More deets . . .
"The most likely landing place for the Chiefs is Kansas City, Kansas, near the Kansas Speedway and a retail and entertainment district known as The Legends. The area is also home to Children’s Mercy Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City.
"Gov. Laura Kelly announced the team will build a headquarters and training facility in Olathe. Both sites will have mixed-use developments that could include sports, entertainment, dining, shopping, office, hotel and residential properties.
"The governor’s office stated the construction of the project will bring over 20,000 jobs and $4.4 billion in economic impact for Kansas. “From there, the stadium will bring over $1 billion in annual impact,” Kelly stated. "
