His 85-year-old mother, Pat Cowart, had suffered to-the-bone gashes across her skull. Her eye sockets and nose were crushed. She needs multiple reconstructive surgeries.
Her suspected attacker was charged by the Johnson County prosecutor's office with aggravated assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm. The charge carries a potential prison sentence of 3.5 years. He is currently being held in the Johnson County Detention Center on a $35,000 bond.
His charge does not sit well with Cowart's son.
"If it was a 5-year-old girl who had been attacked, I think they would be approaching this much more seriously," he said . . .
He has spoken with someone from the Johnson County prosecutor's office about his mother's case and his desire to have the charges upgraded. He plans on meeting with the office again at a court appearance next week.
