Amid a season of hype and supposed dominance of opponents . . . Kansas City lady ballers didn't live up to expectations in the end.
Seriously, the boosterism for the Current was rolled out at an institutional level with city hall getting into the mix and transit boosters even pretending to enjoy lady soccer.
There was even a sports bar that banked their fortunes on the team's seemingly impressive early season win streak.
And then it all fell apart today.
The upside . . . C'mon man . . . Thankfully, lady soccer isn't going to inspire any lasting emotion. It's not like the Super Bowl where authorities and online scribes often warn dudes not to beat their wives after a crushing loss.
Our only real question is how/if local sports newsies will cover the defeat . . . Because they could get away with ignoring it. We're only certain that no criticism will be allowed given that most locals don't even know this team is propped up by taxpayer cash.
Accordingly, here's a bit of reporting on a game that was mostly overlooked by the vast majority of KC sports fans . . .
"The Current were the top seed in the playoffs, having finished first in the NWSL regular season standings with a league record 65 points. Gotham finished eighth with 36 points and were the lowest seed in the postseason. It is just the second time a visiting team has defeated the Current at CPKC Stadium, which was opened in 2024. The loss ends an 18-match unbeaten streak at home for the Current."
