Katie Allen had worked for the Kansas State Department of Education for less than a month when she posted a social media comment on the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
"Well deserved," she commented on a Sept. 10 Facebook post following Kirk's killing that shared a quote from the conservative activist about gun violence . . .
The state is pushing back against Allen's lawsuit in which she alleges two counts of First Amendment retaliatory discharge for exercising speech rights. Allen on Sept. 24 filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Kansas City against KSDE and education commissioner Randy Watson.
The Kansas State Department of Education argues that it didn't fire Allen but says she voluntarily resigned from her research analyst position.
