Downtown Kansas City Parking Crackdown Impacts Disabled People

Locals who have garnered special consideration for wheelchair access and drivers who manage impairments now confront a new problem . . . A ticketing crackdown that doesn't take their tagging into consideration.

Here's a peek at the problem . . .

"The signs, meters and app for the downtown metered street parking do not indicate a four-hour time limit for handicap drivers. City law states disabled drivers with proper tags are "entitled" to four hours of free parking. City and state law also says any time limits must be clearly posted . . . parking enforcement in this downtown East Village area is ramping up. We requested data for this particular overtime parking violation for handicap drivers.

"In 2023, the city handed out one ticket for this violation. In 2024, they documented 10 violations. This year up until Oct. 13 when data was released to FOX4, there have been 49 of those tickets, each about $110."
