Youngster Dies Days After Leawood Car Crash While Riding E-Scooter

Local media will be getting around to more reporting on this tragedy today . . . Here's the aftermath following an outpouring of community support and more than $100,000 donated via online fundraising. 

Several TKC readers noted the death but here's confirmation from a JoCo elected official .  . . 

Gregg Riess, Overland Park Councilman wrote last night:  "We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Duke Ommert.  Duke is the 4th grader struck while riding an electric scooter in Leawood."

Duke Ommert died at a hospital, where he was being treated for critical injuries since the night of Monday, Oct. 13, when he was hit by a driver in the area of West 103rd Street and Lee Boulevard.

The driver remained on the scene and has not been named by police.

"Duke was a young man with a love of sports, his friends, and his family," Leawood police said. "Our thoughts and deep condolences are with the Ommert family and friends during this difficult time."
