Kansas City Modular Temp Jail Built To Last 20-30 Years

Here's a criminal justice hint that things don't always go according to plan and a new lockup will PROBABLY be around for a long time.

A $22 million modular jail initially presented as a temporary solution to the city's detention needs could be built to last 20-30 years, 1st District Councilmember Nathan Willett SAID

"Any facility Kansas City builds will be constructed with quality and care to support a lifespan permitting at least several decades of use," Mayor Quinton Lucas' office confirmed in a statement. "None of our public safety plans conclude with this summer's games."

Between the lines: The city in November purchased land for a separate permanent municipal jail near the new Jackson County detention center — but construction on that facility likely wouldn't begin until 2027 . . .
