It's very popular to hate on federal workers . . . The reality is that reveling in the misery of our neighbors doesn't help anybody . . . Instead, we're happy to share this insight that was sent our way which offers a glimpse behind the scenes as locals struggle on Day 17 of the 2025 federal government shutdown . . .
TKC Reader: IRS - No Overtime And Its Impact
What doesn't get mentioned is most IRS workers work overtime and depend on that OT to bump them up into a livable salary.
It is not uncommon for people to work 30 hrs of OT per two week pay period. So, the people who are "exempt" and are going into work every day and getting paid on time have already received their first no overtime paychecks and it's a huge hit. the longer this goes on that's less money they will have for essentials.
to say nothing of furloughed workers who are not receiving any paychecks and no OT wages.
The other reality is turnover at IRS and other government jobs is very high (up until the past 10 months.)
So, for all the talk about these "jobs being so cushy and easy and you don't even have to work!"
I have to ask why turnover is so enormously high?
Up until recently I would see advertisements for IRS job fairs, 'hired on-site' postings everywhere. Because the job is so easy and you don't have to work? They cannot retain people because it is too easy? They make so much money 30-40% of people quit within first year?
