Longtime local newsman Bill Tammeus shares his perspective on the ranks of the faithful declining over time . . .
The trend is clear, as the Axios story makes clear: “The decline of traditional brick-and-mortar churches comes as a record number of Americans (29%) are identifying as religiously unaffiliated, and as 62% identify as Christians — down from 78% in 2007, according to the Pew Research Center.”
Sometimes, of course, churches and the denominations (if any) to which they belong bring this on themselves.
At one end of the theological spectrum, they demand strict observance of long-held (but now broadly questioned) rules and they engage in the foolishness of reading scripture literally and of rejecting people on society’s margins (people of color, LGBTQ+ people, the poor and more, including the alleged “woke”).
At the other end of the spectrum, they sometimes essentially abandon any serious theology and become little more than a group of community organizers whose activism is not deeply rooted in the teachings, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
