"Since Traders on Grand was repurposed, significant increases in crime, loitering and public intoxication have taken place south of The Grand, its owners wrote in a July 29 letter to the Planned Industrial Expansion Authority(PIEA), published last week. Their letter followed a July 11 shooting, during which two people allegedly fired into The Grand using an automatic rifle and handgun. The building owners said that nine apartments between the fourth and 10th floors were affected, in many cases by significant damage from bullets traveling through windows, closets and cabinets into the living room ceiling, leaving 'holes the size of quarters.'
"That incident represented the fourth time The Grand was shot, its owners said in their letter . . .
"According to a PIEA projection, keeping The Grand's abatement at 100% for an additional 10 years, through 2039, would equate to $2.6 million in additional public benefit to its owners by reducing their payments to affected taxing jurisdictions from $6.2 million to $3.6 million during the incentive's remaining lifespan."
