Perspective . . .
Overall it was a peaceful Summer for Kansas City's oldest entertainment district and the number of violent incidents had declined versus recent years . . . Sadly . . . This morning we awaken to the latest local homicide report and another tragedy for this embattled, historic local.
Here's the first report that police are sharing with local media . . .
Homicide Westport Rd and Mill St
Tonight about 2:50am officers were in the area of Westport and Mill St when they heard the sound of gunfire to the north of that intersection.
Officers immediately responded to the area to investigate and located an adult male shooting victim, unresponsive, to the north and west of Westport and Mill in the restaurant parking lot.
Officers rendered aid and called for EMS. EMS transported the victim to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Homicide detectives and Crime Scene investigators are at the scene canvassing for witnesses and processsing the scene for evidence.
Preliminary indication is the victim was at the location in the business parking lot when he had an interaction with one or more suspect(s) that led to gunfire and the victim was struck.
If anyone was in the area and heard or saw anything or has any information they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
