Many attendees wore shirts with her name in baby blue, her favorite color. They carried blue balloons. There were family and friends. There were teachers and classmates from Ingels Elementary School. Hickman Mills School District Superintendent Dr. Dennis Carpenter walked up from the school just a block away. Others were part of a neighborhood community of caring.
Pastor Dennis Lester of Bethel Family Worship Center shared words he hoped would heal, but he kept it brief for a reason.
“It’s a time for us as a community to give our presence, not our words. It’s not something that a sermon can fix,” Lester said. “Hazen did for us what the church has not been able to do. She brought the community together.”
