The report reveals that McGee told House investigators he never romantically pursued a subordinate. However, subpoenaed phone records tell a very different story.

In the 2019 investigation, McGee denied having romantic intentions toward the employee, stating he had not asked her out or pursued a relationship. But his text messages — uncovered by House leadership — suggest otherwise.

Among the messages revealed were:
 

“Will you marry me?”

“I see a future with you.”

“I think I’m in love with you.”

The romantic messages reportedly continued through March 2018.

Then, in January 2019, McGee eliminated the employee’s position. The same month, she brought her concerns to then-House Minority Leader Crystal Quade.

The House’s mandatory reporting policies triggered the official investigation that led to McGee’s resignation.
