Rather than share late night ranting about free speech or the fate of some C-list comedian . . . Allow us to simply offer another quick glimpse of Kansas City's love affair with the past.
This week's not-so-big promo news . . .
The KCTV5 tower is aglow once again.
The lights are more muted than the original but thankfully don't use nearly as much energy.
It might not be the greatest civic achievement but seems to make locals happy by remembering cowtown glory days that never really existed.
Amid so many fond memories of the inglorious past, we GENTLY remind readers that nostalgia can become dangerous when it is excessive and creates a distorted, idealized version of the past, preventing an individual or a society from engaging with the present and progressing into the future.
In all of the excitement over the illumination of this outdated tech . . . Nobody has really asked WHY this is such a big deal or if it's even necessary.
Admittedly, it's not much of a milestone and nothing to get too upset over . . . And we can't complain too much in this weekly post that's always dedicated to songs from the past.
And so . .
Tonight we merely mark the occasion and our www.TonysKansasCity.com playlist will simply celebrate with more than a few songs about lights . . .
A perfect place to start, this song from Manfred Mann's Earth Band DOES NOT involve a reference to feminine hygiene products no matter how many times listeners have misheard it.
If nothing else, TKC is a place to enjoy fun facts . . . Here's one more: Every white lady over 40 STILL LOVES this Madonna song even if Tay-Tay crushed their spirit and forced them info Swiftie fandom.
If we wanted to breeze through this list, we'd just include a familiar classic tune but tonight we wanted to dig a bit deeper for our nostalgia fix and share this peek at a popular international dance track that's nearly a decade old but might still sound familiar if only for those dedicated to fighting against the inevitability of corporate globalism . . . Check-it . . .
For the bridge . . . A Kansas City related song and the anthem of former TV contest winner David Cook that actually isn't so bad after all these years.
Finally, we finish with camp and a 70s standard that doesn't just celebrate sentimental cringe . . . "You Light Up My Life" as performed by Debbie Boone might be the inspiration that we all need in order to escape the clutches of fond memories.
As always, thanks for reading this week and have a safe & fun Saturday night.
