So many sports talkers along with the assorted rantings of Bob Fescoe over and over again tell us that the future of the Kansas City Royals lies in suburban Johnson Country or near some soybean field in the Dotte.
Quickly, we wanted to point out a few reasons why that doesn't work in the long run . . .
Developing amongst suburbanites can be painful
Believe it or not . . . Overland Park Karens are even more persnickety than downtown dive bar owners and they're much more effective and pleading for sympathy in front of cameras.
New Stadiums Don't Help Lousy Teams
Nobody goes to see a baseball game because the stadium is nice. Overall the MLB is losing fans and baseball is no longer the national pastime.
The NextGen would much rather play video games or do ANYTHING but sit around watching dudes scratch themselves for 3 & 1/2 hours.
Sell out crowds are infrequent at the K . . . And let's not forget the franchise has been a perennial cellar dweller for most of its existence with only 2 & 1/2 winning season exceptions.
But here's the most important reason . . .
Fake Downtown Simulations Never Work
The "Royal plan" seems to be to crafting a fake a downtown rather than negotiate with a real city. We've seen this scheme FAIL over and over again . . . From Union Station STL to the Northland's Town Center and even the sketchy finances of the Legends . . . Attempts to recreate the downtown experience NEVER hold interest after taxpayer cash runs out . . . These efforts imagine a consumerist trap instead of real places for people to live & work and the only place where they excel is tricking weak-minded politicos into hand over BILLIONS worth of taxpayer cash to burn.
Still . . .
None of this intends to stop the inevitable destruction of the K . . . But, per ushe, we merely serve to warn that the future isn't as bright as so many Kansas baseball fans imagine.
