For those who looked closely . . . AI reported ANOTHER EPIC KCMO LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT late Thursday night, the newspaper might print something a few hours after TKC but we wanted offer KICK-ASS INSIDER COMMENT that's more informed than mere transcription.
The basics . . .
KANSAS CITY SETTLES ANOTHER SEX & AGE DISCRIMINATION COMPLAINT FOR NEARLY ONE MILLION BUCKS!!!
But there are a few important takeaways here according to insiders . . . First:
"KCMO clearly has no confidence in the Legal Dept. because they didn't put up a serious fight in a lawsuit that should have been an easy win."
More importantly . . .
"This pattern of settlements demonstrates that courts don't have much sympathy for Kansas City and our lawyers face a jury pool that has so much disdain for city hall that they're quick to award huge victories . . . As bad as this settlement is, it could have been much worse."
Finally . . . A very smart insider reminds us . . .
"It's unfortunate because most taxpayers don't realize that KC is self-insured in cases like these and juries are literally giving away their own money . . . If more people knew that these funds will be taken away from our streets & neighborhoods. Maybe the outcome would've been different."
Accordingly, we share a bit of background on the complaint along with links on the former 12th & Oak worker who now manages Westport along with the City Clerk documentation wherein city hall, strangely, put the name of the plaintiff on blast as part of the public record . . .
Kerrie Tyndall, 54, alleged in a sex and age discrimination lawsuit that the city manager, who was 35 when he was hired almost three years ago, treated her unfairly and demoted her because she gave him advice that he didn’t want to hear.
Frustrated by her cautious approach to green-lighting development deals that he supported, former city manger Brian Platt sidelined her, the suit alleges, and excluded her from important meetings.
He began assigning some of her duties to younger and male co-workers and ultimately removed her from her post as assistant city manager and director of economic development. Platt transferred her to what she considered a dead-end job at the aviation department last September. She quit a month later.
