A local legislator offers a perspective to consider . . . In a democracy, even the super-majority has to work with the minority at some point.
And so . . . It MIGHT be important to consider the promise of PAYBACK in order to protect Congressman Cleaver's spot and stall rumors of the controversial half-decade redistricting plan.
From our perspective . . .
Missouri isn't like Texas inasmuch as we can trust our "ambitious" Republicans to fall over each other whilst attempting to stab their own conservative colleagues in the back . . . Redistricting in Missouri will CERTAINLY hinder the Democratic Party but it also risks jostling around the GOP and there's not much incentive to do that merely to follow the directives of the White House. The "super-majority" sounds threatening but often forgets so much Republican intra-party rivalry that dominates Jeff City.
Meanwhile, here's a local politico sharing her view of the drama . . .
State Sen. Patty Lewis, D-Kansas City warned that Missouri Republicans risk getting basically nothing done in 2026, especially since Democrats are still fuming over the use of the previous question to go after voter-approved paid sick leave requirements and abortion rights protections.
"Even though they have the super majority, there's a lot of issues that require the Democrats' votes, like the budget," Lewis said. "If they continue with their plan to gerrymander the maps, I have no desire to work with them."
