Kansas City Activists Outraged After Prospect Sunfresh Shutdown

Over the course of its troubled existence, Kansas City taxpayers funded the Prospect Sun Fresh with more than 29 MILLION BUCKS that still wasn't enough to save the grocery store from an inevitable closure this week.

So far, the tragic tale has inspired outrage and heartache but mostly an effort to cast blame.

Accordingly, we want to share a MASTERPIECE OF RACIALLY-CHARGED MUNICIPAL ANTIPATHY from local activist bloggers who seem to claim that NOT ENOUGH cash was wasted in the doomed foodie ffort.

Here's their money line that also seems like a very thinly-veiled threat . . .

The operator says they lost $1.3 million last year, blaming theft as a key driver. At a grocery store in the middle of a food desert, “theft” means bread, meat, baby formula, the bare minimum to stay alive. As Dr. Eddie Glaude Jr. told Prosecutor Melesa Johnson & attendees at the Urban League Luncheon during the jail tax fight earlier this year: “If I’m hungry, you’re not safe.”

Consider . . .

That kind of prison talk might seem bold and provocative to the emotionally immature . . . But in reality if someone is hungry they can just walk less than five minutes to the nearby Aldi and buy whatever they'd like . . . Sorry, but the "food desert" spin only works on people who don't know the neighborhood and don't want to challenge brash rhetoric that doesn't stand up to even a modicum of scrutiny.

And here's one more bit of misguided advocacy that argues against public safety for the urban core AND financial accountability . . .

Meanwhile, the city just approved a new jail that will cost about $1 million per bed to build and nearly $1 Billion to operate over its lifetime. There’s always a blank check for cages. For groceries, there’s a magnifying glass and a timer. We demand “results” from a supermarket that feeds families, but never from the institutions that swallow billions and give us neither safety nor peace.

And so . . .

We really wanted to share this one in order to offer a glimpse at the dysfunction and pathology of the local discourse given that "the KC Defender" has been widely celebrated by the progressive local media establishment despite constant threats, vitriol and NOTHING resembling journalism or thoughtful commentary . . . In fact, they don't even have the decency to share bikini season pix.
