NIMBY E-Bike Crackdown Coming Soon To Overland Park

As always, let's define terms . . . 

NIMBY, or "Not In My Backyard," is a term used to describe the opposition to development projects, often by local residents who don't want the project to be built near them. NIMBYism is characterized by a reluctance to accept changes, especially those perceived as undesirable, even if those changes might benefit a wider community.  

To be fair . . . 

We don't blame our suburb friends for their frustration with this trend.

In KCMO we've noticed a bit less "enthusiasm" for the lower-tier mode of transit after Gen-Xers in the 50s started breaking hips.

Overland Park recently saw a fatal crash between an e-bike and a car on Metcalf Avenue. City leaders are now looking at guidelines and rules for the electric vehicles. 

"There's a lot of confusion about what are the rules, where are folks supposed to be?" Ward 2 Councilmember Melissa Cheatham said. "Are they supposed to be on the sidewalk or on the street?"

The city doesn't want to take electric transit away, but instead re-imagine how the streets can carry everyone safely.

Overland Park to look at e-scooter, e-bike guidelines following increase in injuries among youth

E-scooters and e-bikes are widely available and popular throughout the Kansas City metro. In Johnson County, you'll often find kids and teens riding them in their neighborhoods.
