Jackson County’s charter specifies that a recall election must happen within 60 days of those signatures being certified.
Election officials expressed concern about the timeline. It’s less time than they usually have to plan an election. The directors of the Kansas City Election Board (KCEB), which handles the portion of Jackson County that is in Kansas City limits, said the county legislature needs to set a date and approve ballot language. They can’t secure polling places until they have a date. They can’t program voting machines until they have approved ballot language.
Legislators and election board officials are still trying to find agreement on whether the 60 days is calendar days or business days. The directors of the two election boards said they are also considering seeking a judicial opinion on the legality of holding the election on Nov. 4.
