Here's the problem . . .
The "science" tells us that marriage ends badly no matter what . . . Divorce is likely, if things works out then it's just a waiting game until somebody dies.
Either way . . . There is no happy way out.
Even worse . . .
Smart dudes on the Internets tell us that marriage is an invitation to financial ruin for EVERY dude with more than a few bucks to his name.
But beyond that . . . Here's where things get messy:
TKC HAS NEVER MET ONE DUDE WHO WAS REALLY HAPPILY MARRIED!!!
Seriously, in this line of work I've talked to A LOT of people and only a few would give me the courtesy of faking marital happiness . . . Most of them are either divorced or in outright misery. And I wouldn't want to switch places with ANY OF THEM.
In Paradise Lost, Britain's most celebrated poet John Milton imagined Satan uttering:
"Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven"
That's a bit harsh but no worse than some of the things I've heard divorced guys mutter.
As for ladies . . .
Watch 30 minutes of The View and realize that marriage does nothing but embitter and antagonize women who started out youthful, happy & hopeful.
Of course we have faith that somewhere out there . . . There might be an answer to our not so quiet desperation . . .
But . . .
It's not unreasonable to hold onto the sneaking suspicion that marriage is just one more lousy consumer contract waiting to entrap gullible people into the illusion that romantic love is something more than just fleeting, ethereal bliss and deploying tradition & family history to bind couples to obedience to clerics, banks, the state and whatever retailer currently dominates the market for consumer goods.
In fairness, here are better people doing their best to distract from realistic moments of doubt . . .
"City on a Hill is a young adult apostolate that cultivates Catholic community in the Kansas City metro area. Through signature events, recreational sports leagues and men’s and women’s small groups, members can form friendships, grow in faith and find accountability and support.
"Beyond this, City on a Hill has inspired more than 100 marriages in its nearly two decades of existence. This success brings hope to young Catholics looking for love."
