"Trauma lingers from Brownback’s infamous 2012 economic experiment, which saw income taxes slashed so steeply and suddenly that Kansas lurched into a years-long fiscal tailspin. Bipartisan pushback to those cuts — and Brownback’s dismal 23% average approval rating during his final year in office — helped pave the way for Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly to pull off narrow victories in 2018 and 2022.
"With Kelly ineligible for a third consecutive term next year, GOP operatives are cautiously optimistic that Democrats’ moment in the Sunflower State is waning. But several big names among the current crop of Republican candidates — including former Gov. Jeff Colyer, state Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt and Secretary of State Scott Schwab — all voted for or helped implement key aspects of Brownback’s economic agenda . . ."
