The lawsuit CLAIMS the new law, House Bill 495, violates state law by imposing a new "unfunded mandate" to increase the police budget and applying that requirement only to the City of St. Louis.
“Particularly, in this post-tornado landscape, it is clear that public safety means a lot of things: we need money for things like emergency systems, forestry, streets, and housing support for families," Executive Director of ArchCity Defenders Blake Strode said in a press release. "Forcing St. Louisans to instead underwrite these narrow and undesired police investments is wrong and unlawful.”
