Deadly American Political Violence 2025: Minnesota State Lawmaker Shot & Killed

Today this report emerged in the open thread and it might not be directly related to Kansas City BUT offers a glimpse at worsening danger confronting elected officials.

Sadly, we notice political trolls already attempting to spin the news to their advantage and inadvertently making their advocacy seem even more disgusting . . . Still, nothing about the shameless Internets surprises us anymore even as online anonymity quickly disappears.  In fact, capitalizing on tragedy has become an integral part of American politics as Democratic Party leader Rahm Emanuel once said: "You never want a serious crisis to go to waste." His quote that was immediately envied & embraced by Republicans and has ALWAYS been practiced across partisan lines. But I digress . . .

As of this writing, here's a quote from a BBC passage offering the best summary of the story so far:

"A Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband were shot and killed in their home early on Saturday morning in what Governor Tim Walz called an "act of targeted political violence".

"House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, 55, a Democrat, and her husband were killed in Brooklyn Park, a city near Minneapolis.

"State Senator John Hoffman, 60, also a Democrat, and his wife were targeted in their home in nearby Champlin in a related shooting.

"They were shot multiple times and are out of surgery, Walz said, adding he was "cautiously optimistic" they would survive.

"A manhunt is underway for a suspect who was impersonating a police officer."
