Kansas City Summer 2025 Starts With Deadly Gunfire In Westport

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of Summer which is traditionally the most violent time of year in Kansas City, Missouri.

Our question . . .

HOW WILL LOCAL LEADERS ADDRESS KANSAS CITY'S LATEST VIOLENT CRIME SPIKE?!?

Consider . . .

After an uptick that lasted throughout most of his tenure . . . A slight drop-off last year was celebrated by local officials as a sign of progress and that so many millions in anti-crime funding for no-show jobs was proving effective.

So far this year . . . With a nearly 20% uptick in homicides . . . That "progress" is harder to justify.

And as we consider all of that . . .

We share an overview of the latest violence in KC's historic party district . . . Thanks to AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS for sending photos from the scene . . .

Here's the update:

Homicide 3900 block of Broadway

This evening just after 4PM, officers were dispatched to Westport and Broadway on a reported accident. While officers were enroute, the call was updated to a shooting.

A shooting victim was located by officers in a vehicle near 43rd and Broadway unresponsive and suffering from gunshot trauma. EMS responded and transported the victim to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased.

Preliminary information indicates an argument took place inside of a business. The argument continued as both the adult male victim and an adult male suspect walked outside of the business. The argument then escalated to gunfire. The victim left the area in a vehicle before coming to a stop near 43rd and Broadway. Initial responding officers located a male at Westport and Broadway that had been involved in an accident when the victim was driving out of the area and subsequently struck his vehicle.

Homicide detectives in crime scene personnel have responded to the scene to begin gathering evidence and collecting witness statements. This incident is being investigated as a homicide and is ongoing at this time.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.

We are working with Partners for Peace in all our homicide investigations to monitor risks for retaliation and provide social services to affected residents.
