Kansans for Constitutional Freedom filed a lawsuit against the Kansas Attorney General’s Office and the Kansas Ethics Commission on May 19 over a new law banning foreign nationals from contributing to campaigns for constitutional amendments in the state.
Kansans for Constitutional Freedom is alleging that the bill strips free speech rights from noncitizens who are entitled to speech protections for political advocacy. It says the bill’s provisions aren’t narrowly targeted at foreign governments, foreign nationals with no connection to the Unted States or foreign corporations.
“The law’s definition of foreign national reaches many who are lawfully residing in the United States,” the lawsuit says.
