For years the Jackson County Detention Center has been regarded as one of the most dysfunctional and dangerous institutions in the metro.
This crisis regarding alleged human rights violations has been ongoing and inspired legislators to build a new jail.
Now . . .
Recent upheaval inside the facility has resulted in injury and more allegations of abuse and unnecessary suffering inflicted upon inmates.
And so . . .
We're sharing this note that comes from trusted www.TonysKansasCity.com readers. We have omitted any names but what we can share is that the document is currently circulating to THOUSANDS on social media, it has been mailed to every news outlet in KCMO and local leaders are monitoring worsening outcry regarding this situation.
Here's the testimony . . .
I am writing with urgency and distress to bring attention to serious
human rights violations occurring at the Jackson County Detention Center
and five other incarcerated individuals.
These men have been placed in the basement of the facility—a section reportedly closed due to safety concerns. Despite this, they are being held in cells with standing water and deprived of the most basic necessities. They have been stripped of all personal property, including legal documents, writing utensils, and hygiene items. They have no access to food, paper, or communication materials, and are without sheets or blankets. The only items in their cells are water-covered floors and a mattress.
The situation escalated into physical violence earlier this week. Between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, my son was forcibly removed from his cell while restrained and was beaten by correctional officers for four to five minutes. He sustained serious injuries, including head trauma, contusions, two black eyes, and suspected fractures to his foot and knee.
Following the assault, he spent the last 48 hours hospitalized at University Health. He has since been returned to the Jackson County Detention Center. Medical staff at University Health documented his injuries and took photographs.
This is a dire situation demanding immediate public and legal scrutiny. The treatment of these individuals is inhumane and constitutes a violation of their civil and constitutional rights. I am pleading for media coverage and investigative attention to help ensure accountability and prevent further harm.
Please help my son and other inmates at Jackson County Detention Center.
