Tuesday marked the conclusion of the teen’s certification hearing, with defense attorneys making their final case to keep him in the juvenile system.
They claim K.H. has endured a life marked by trauma, including surviving cancer three times, experiencing abuse, homelessness, and substance abuse—all before the age of 10.
They also say the boy witnessed deadly violence as well.
The state, however, pushed back hard.
Prosecutors argued that the severity of the crime outweighs the teens’ traumatic past.
They say that while his experiences are heartbreaking, they don’t justify what they describe as an act of extreme violence.
