A highly regarded Kansas City community resource shared Sunday disappointment with friends & followers regarding funding cuts under the new White House administration.
Earlier today via a public Facebook post, Ivanhoe Neighborhood representative Alana Henry shared news of a USDA termination letter regarding the fate of an urban farming plan which had garnered a great deal of enthusiasm.
Ms. Henry shared scathing comments regarding "pseudo President Elon Musk, Donald Trump, and his DOGE cohort" along with news of the shut down. She also rallied her followers to mobilize and do something more productive than share mean social media comments.
In this passage she shares her assessment of the damage to the community efforts . . .
"Canceling Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council’s 3-year Farmer’s Market Promotion Program Award for being “too DEI”. Our proposal included training for small-scale, urban, and Black/brown growers to increase production capacity, supports of backyard gardeners and local growers to begin selling produce at our farmers markets, and initiatives to engage more members of our historically disinvested community in local food at our market. We were to expand market season, add a market for young mothers on WIC and seniors utilizing SFMNP, and recruit more farmers selling produce for our SNAP/EBT customers.
"Oh, did I mention getting healthy foods to people and capacity-building for local growers?
"We had already begun our work, had interviewed for positions and even received our first disbursement—a whopping $3,000. "

Ivanhoe Neighborhood Council Representative Alana Henry: "This isn’t about “eliminating waste and fraud”. This won’t just affect “those people over there”. This affects everyone. We are in the middle of a hostile takeover and some of us are yet again asleep at the wheel."
