According to November numbers from KCPD, the department needs 271 more officers to reach its desired goal of 1,408 (44 of which would be in the academy).

Cpt. Justin Pinkerton with KCPD’s employment unit watched about 40 police recruits fill out classroom tests, go through background checks, polygraph tests and a physical test on Wednesday.

“We’re going in the right direction – we’ve almost doubled the amount of people that have tested from 2023 to 2024,” Pinkerton said. “The overwhelming majority. They want to help people. That’s the line.”
