Over the past week we've noticed Kansas City council members gearing up to help push a new public safety sales tax.
There's a lot to unpack in this discussion but we think the topic of police staffing is a great place to start.
A trusted Kansas City insider recently shared this fact check . . .
LISTEN CLOSELY & NOTICE NEITHER MAYOR NOR COUNCIL PROMISE MORE POLICE IN THEIR PUSH FOR FOR AN UPCOMING PUBLIC SAFETY TAX VOTE!!!
This is an important point for a couple of reasons . . .
Last year KCMO authorized MILLIONS for anti-crime programs but the homicide count continues to rise over the century mark amid some very high-profile and soul crushing killings. Moreover, the spike in property crime has been pronounced.
Moreover . . .
Despite activists pleading and some very sketchy social science research . . . Police union leaders and longtime neighborhood denizens believe that MORE COPS ON THE STREET is the best way to address the historic uptick in local crime. For years we've heard complaints about staffing yet we haven't seen much progress on the issue . . . Even worse, again, there's no sign that this tax spike will confront the staffing problem.
A quick word shared with our www.TonysKansasCity.com blog community . . .
"It just doesn't make any sense . . .
"How can you have a public safety tax increase with no new police?!?
"Making sure that we get KCPD numbers up should've been our very first course of action and now it doesn't even register as a priority for the new tax. We keep trying the same strategies that don't work. Maybe now it's time to get back to basics instead of asking taxpayers to fund programs that aren't helping business owners avoid so many break-ins or communities dealing with violent crime ."
