It's an open secret that workers at the Kansas City Honeywell facility are soon to be confronting layoffs.
First, a quick introduction because these type of posts typically attract a lot of national online traffic beyond our dedicated local readership. For nearly 20 years www.TonysKansasCity.com has become an integral part of the local news scene by blogging what everybody knows but is afraid to say, discussion regarding layoffs has typically been part of our discourse over the years.
We don't share these rumors lightly . . . TKC understands that Honeywell is a well-respected contractor with connections at the highest & most secure levels of politics and government.
Nevertheless . . . Fear of impending layoffs travels quickly and has finally reached our low-end corner of the Internets.
Accordingly . . . Here's the word and the main points . . .
- 3rd shift at Honeywell now confronts layoffs according to insiders and a few others familiar with the situation.
- These are EXCELLENT JOBS with great benefits and top pay that will be hard to replace . . . There certainly aren't many other employers of this caliber in the Kansas City metro area. Given recent layoffs at Oracle (formerly Cerner) it's very likely that Honeywell is the top private employer in the area.
- The root cause of the layoffs seems to be a dearth of work coming through . . . Insiders notice and are telling just about everybody that many employees don't seem very busy and spend a great deal of their shift standing around . . . Obviously, that's not sustainable.
And so . . .
There might or might not be official confirmation of Honeywell layoffs sometime in the very near future as union leaders are poised to push back against any reduction of force.
In the meantime . . . The Kansas City economy suffers another setback as US job numbers remain soft.
