Over the course of recent tax debate in Jackson County, local residents and readers of www.TonysKansasCity.com have witnessed Preston Smith demonstrate a wealth of knowledge and skill when it comes to holding the Courthouse responsible.
Reality check: The sole reason that so many locals are informed about WHY they should be upset about higher property tax rates is become of the work that Mr. Smith has generously shared.
And all that is WHY we take his words seriously.
And so tonight . . . For those who haven't seen it already . . .
CHECK PRESTON SMITH CHALLENGING THE JACKSON COUNTY GOP CHAIR OVER PROPERTY TAX FIGHT FAIL!!!
Here's the word and a link to more info . . .
LAUER SHOULD STEP DOWN AS CHAIR OF THE COUNTY LEGISLATURE:
The Legislature session on Monday, Aug 12, was beyond the pale and Chair Jeanie Lauer should step down as the chair . . . She shut down Sean Smith when he had a proper motion on the floor for a vote on whether the Legislature should tell the County not to fight the STC order. Also see how she bends at every whim the County admin and attorneys say. There is no independence here, folks.
Also see how she bends at every whim the County admin and attorneys say. There is no independence here, folks.
But this is not the first time that she limited debate. A few weeks ago Lauer permitted a motion to limit debate on a motion made by Manny Abarca IV based only only a majority decision, and Abarca correctly raised whether it should have been a two-thirds affirmative vote. He was ignored, but 100% correct.
Lauer always, to me, seems to defend or give Gail McCann Beatty soft-ball questions. She has much to defend and give an account for, since she was one of the original Legislators in 2019 who gave Tyler Technologies the $17M contract. She sat on her hands in 2019, and did nothing to fix the errors in that assessment and has done even less in 2023 to help fix this assessment.
If you agree that the Legislature needs a new chair, drop her a note and let her know. If I thought there was any chance she would completely resign her seat, I'd ask for that, but she has enjoyed the power of an elected official for so long, she is unlikely to give that up. With that power comes with it the responsibility to actually do something to serve the people, which she forgot a long, long time ago.
As a Blue Springs resident, I'm also going to let her know that I have already found one person, a Democrat, who will be glad to take her on in Fall 2026 if she runs for re-election. I also am close to having a real Republican to beat her in a primary.
