"The church now is trying to move away from those racist ideas, which were taught from soon after its founding in 1830 until the ban on ordaining Black men was lifted in June 1978 after what the church called a "revelation," meaning an insight straight from God. (It's unclear why God waited so long to reveal this to church leaders.)

"From 1978 until now, LDS leaders have slowly -- at times reluctantly -- begun dismantling the profoundly racist teachings that this American-born religion had preached consistently."
