Allow us a bloggy personal aside . . .
From our perspective this decision represents new ground for students and parents and deserves attention.
As a Gen-Xer, we often witnessed brutal fist fight near and around school with broken noses, ribs & teeth and the outcome and punishment was nothing more than a forced handshake and detention. For Catholics, public humiliation and guilt is the most critical component of socialization.
However . . . In this case . . .
Notice that local political activism and social media comments drew an inordinate amount of attention and drew the notice of authorities.
For better or worse and because we don't feel too much sympathy here because the assault was against a female . . .
This case proves that youngsters are now on the world stage where all of their misdeeds will be judged through the lens of online discourse . . . Check-it:
"The teen pleaded guilty to aggravated battery/great harm in May in Johnson County Juvenile Court. The incident occurred Nov.15, 2023, in a hallway at the school at West 75th Street and Mission Road in Prairie Village. The victim, Brey'anna Brown, suffered a broken nose in the fight, which was quickly stopped by school staff and other students. The teen used a racial slur twice as he approached."
