"Firefighters at the scene found a two-year-old, a four-year-old, and a nine-year-old stuck inside a connected building that had been turned into an illegal makeshift apartment.
"Crews worked to extinguish the fire, but flames had already spread to the second building, where firefighters found the apartment and the children.
"Investigators with the Kansas City police department and the fire department are still investigating the cause of the fire and trying to find the children's guardians."
