Kansas City History Of Downtown Brothels & Vice Well-Remembered

Our favorite report of the weekend reminds us of a fact that's often forgotten . . . 

Since our inception Kansas City has mostly been central location wherein country folk from across the Midwest can get a taste of world-class vice and then return to their quiet lives of desperation back in the sticks. The story of this town has been one of gambling, rough trade, corruption and violence since from the start. 

Accordingly . . . 

Here's a nicer look at this truism amid the underground effort to make this town a nicer place despite our bad intentions . . . Check-it: 

City Union Mission had a rocky start. Originally in a storefront at 5th and Main, there were 40 brothels in the area.

None like the so-called resort operated by Annie Chambers at 3rd and Wyandotte. Her 24-room mansion had a barber shop and a ballroom. Ms. Chambers required her girls dress properly and conduct themselves as refined ladies. Annie knew many prominent Kansas Citians, politicians and law enforcement brass. A button set off an alarm at KCPD headquarters about three blocks away.
