Kansas City 2024 Homicide #54: Deadly Gunfire Starts Memorial Day Weekend

A few hours after a Kansas City Police press conference promising "focused deterrence" in order to curb the record-breaking homicide count trend . . . This cowtown records another killing at the outset of the unofficial start to Summer.

Here's the first report and more news coverage . . .

Homicide I-70 and Van Brunt Blvd

Tonight just before 6:30pm officers were on patrol in the area of 31st and Van Brunt when they heard the sound of gunshots. They immediately moved into the area to investigate further and were directed to the car wash just south of I 70 on Van Brunt.

They located a vehicle with an adult male shooting victim inside unresponsive. Officers rendered aid and called EMS to the scene. EMS took over treatment and declared the victim deceased at the scene.

Detectives and Crime Scene investigators are canvassing for witnesses and processing for evidence to hopefully get a better idea of what led up to the shooting and any leads on the identification of suspect(s).

Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred in the area of the exit ramp from eastbound I-70 down onto Van Brunt Boulevard.

If anyone heard or saw anything in this area or has any information they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.

We are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime. Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.
