Mary Sanchez Reports Country Club Plaza Tennis Court Crisis

This isn't the most "impactful" story in Kansas City but the tennis courts near the Plaza are a good benchmark for public safety and overall interest in the struggling entertainment district. 

On a practical level . . . The bright lights of the tennis court were once thought of as a nuisance but they might actually help to deter local crime after dark. 

Either way . . . Here's the latest from a former newspaper writer who often gets stuck covering all things local Latino but right now uses her investigative skill to document the fate of fuzzy balls amid the death of retail . . .

"The 14 lighted outdoor courts, located on the eastern edge of the Country Club Plaza, have long been the subject of speculation, primarily because the site is also viewed as prime real estate by developers.

"The Plaza Tennis Center will be operated at least through the end of the year by the United States Tennis Association-Missouri Valley (USTA), through an agreement finalized last week by the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners . . .

"The parks board’s decision at least temporarily stifles, but certainly won’t end, ongoing concern about the Plaza Tennis Center’s future."

Plaza Tennis Center Under New Management Amid Country Club Plaza Uncertainty

The Plaza Tennis Center will be operated by the United States Tennis Association-Missouri Valley after Genesis Health Clubs defaulted on a management contract.
